Coffee in Stills

Mining the History of Chikmagalur's Liquid Gold
By Punya Satija

In the verdant hills of Chikmagalur, Karnataka, lies a story as rich and robust as the coffee it produces. The history of coffee in Chikmagalur is a tale of adventure, innovation, and cultural heritage that spans centuries.

It was in the 17th century that coffee found its way to the fertile soil of Chikmagalur, courtesy of Baba Budan, a legendary Sufi saint. As the story goes, Baba Budan smuggled seven magical coffee beans from Yemen, hidden in his beard, and planted them on the slopes of the Chandragiri Hills. These humble beginnings marked the dawn of a coffee revolution in Chikmagalur and paved the way for its transformation into the coffee capital of India.

The favorable climate and altitude of Chikmagalur proved to be ideal for coffee cultivation, and soon, the region became synonymous with the finest Arabica and Robusta beans. Under the patronage of the Wodeyar rulers of Mysore, coffee plantations flourished, and Chikmagalur emerged as a thriving hub of coffee trade and commerce.

In the years that followed, Chikmagalur witnessed waves of immigrants, including Europeans, who brought with them expertise in coffee cultivation and processing. The introduction of modern techniques and machinery further propelled the growth of the coffee industry, making Chikmagalur a powerhouse of coffee production in India.

Throughout its history, coffee has not only shaped the economy of Chikmagalur but also woven itself into the cultural fabric of the region. From traditional coffee rituals to vibrant festivals celebrating the harvest season, coffee is deeply ingrained in the daily lives and traditions of the people of Chikmagalur.

Today, Chikmagalur stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of coffee, with its sprawling plantations, quaint hillside cafes, and passionate coffee connoisseurs. As visitors wander through the lush green landscapes and breathe in the intoxicating aroma of freshly brewed coffee, they become part of a story that began centuries ago—a story of resilience, ingenuity, and the timeless allure of Chikmagalur's liquid gold.
